Walk into the history of Floreana
Floreana is a place full of places to experience: At the Asilo de la Paz, 45 minutes from the community by local bus, you can discover the pirates' cave, which was the home of the first inhabitants of the island. You can walk inside volcanic labyrinths and discover the freshwater side of the island. You can also admire the face carved in volcanic stone and observe the Floreana turtles. This place offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and natural beauty of the island, allowing you to explore unique landscapes and discover the rich biodiversity that surrounds it. An unforgettable experience awaits you at the Asilo de la Paz!
Suggestions:
If you want to go see the asylum of peace, every day at 6 am and 3 pm there is a local car that you can take on the main avenue of the island, the cost is $2 per person and you will have approximately one hour to go around the place independently, don't forget to bring a personal water bottle, insect repellent, sunscreen.
Swim with sea turtles
The lobería that is located just 15 minutes from our community is an impressive place. Its crystal clear waters are perfect for snorkeling and enjoying the marine beauty that surrounds us. Here we can swim alongside turtles, tropical fish and some sea lions, giving us the opportunity to be in direct contact with marine life.
Don't forget the black beach is an ideal place to relax, swim and sunbathe. It is perfect for enjoying long summer days. Plus, the sunsets at this beach are simply stunning, with the sun setting over the horizon and painting the sky in warm, vibrant tones. Without a doubt, it is a destination that offers a unique experience for those looking for a moment of tranquility and natural beauty.
Post Office
The mail barrel is an old tradition in Ecuador that dates back to 1793, when it was installed by sailors of the time. Today, it is used by tourists visiting the island, who can send letters by simply writing the correct destination address (without a stamp).
Tradition is responsible for getting the letter to its destination, although this can take weeks, months or even years. It's a lovely way to keep postal tradition alive in an increasingly digital world. Who would you send a postcard to?
Octopus Route
The Octopus route is an ideal place to enjoy a walk surrounded by impressive volcanic landscapes, near the coast and enjoying the sea breeze. If you are lucky at the end of the trail, you will find a small lagoon where you can see flamingos. This picturesque walk offers you a unique experience, with the opportunity to enjoy nature and wildlife in a peaceful and beautiful environment.
Without a doubt, the Octopus Trail is a must-see for anyone who enjoys being outdoors and exploring natural beauty.
Note: To do this path you can start at the corner of the local church (near the pier), head north until you reach the Galapagos National Park offices in Floreana and then just let yourself be surrounded by the magical volcanic landscape, accompanied by iguanas red sea turtles and sea turtles dancing in the water.
Cerro Allieri Viewpoint
The Cerro Allieri viewpoint is an impressive observation point that offers panoramic views of the island and its surroundings. This site, accessible via a scenic walk, is surrounded by rich biodiversity, including endemic plants and diverse bird species. At Cerro Allieri, visitors can enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of Floreana, while exploring the lush vegetation and unique geological formations of the region.
Ways to get there:
From the community of Floreana you can walk along the main avenue towards the mountains for 1 hour or take the local bus for 15 minutes.
Red Marine Iguana
The red marine iguana, one of the most striking species in the Galapagos, lives on Floreana Island and is distinguished by its vibrant reddish coloration, especially visible during the mating season. This reptile, adapted to life in the sea, feeds mainly on algae that it scrapes from submerged rocks. Red marine iguanas are expert swimmers, with strong fins and sharp claws that allow them to cling to rocks in the midst of waves. Their unique appearance and fascinating behavior make these iguanas a must-see natural attraction for visitors to Floreana.
Marine iguanas' colors change during mating season, which occurs from January to March. During this period, iguanas exhibit bright shades of red, green, turquoise and orange. The "Christmas iguana" is particularly famous for its coloration reminiscent of a Christmas tree, combining these vibrant colors. This transformation is a natural spectacle that attracts many visitors to the Galapagos.
